Democrats Helping Democrats - Thank you, Senator Feingold

Tue Aug 19, 2008 at 04:06:21 PM PDT

Last week, Senator Russ Feingold’s team called us with great news.  They are sending our campaign a trained campaign staffer as a part of their Patriot Fund Corp program.  The good news didn’t stop there, Senator Feingold also added me to his Progressive Patriots Fund contest, along with only eight other Democratic candidates.

I cannot tell you how honored and appreciative I am.

HILL: D.C. Dems Back Off Health Care Promises

Thu Apr 24, 2008 at 06:39:57 AM PDT

Join the book club for David Sirota's upcoming book, The Uprising, due out on 5/27.

In a stunning - if predictable - story, the Hill Newspaper reports that congressional Democrats are now saying that they will effectively thwart any effort to create a national health care program. Here is the key excerpt:

"Congressional Democrats are backing away from healthcare reform promises made by their two presidential candidates, saying that even if their party controls the White House and Congress, sweeping change will be difficult...Sen. Charles Schumer (N.Y.), a member of Senate Democratic leadership and a key Hillary Clinton ally who also sits on the Finance Committee, said he is 'not sure we have the big plan on healthcare.'...'Healthcare I feel strongly about, but I am not sure that we're ready for a major national healthcare plan,' Schumer said...Rep. Kendrick Meek (D-Fla.), a Clinton supporter who sits on the House Ways and Means Committee, said "the money is not necessarily there right now" to enact the plans."

There's a lot to unpack here.

Two Sunshine State Stories Portend GE Problems

Sat Mar 22, 2008 at 01:49:45 PM PDT

The first story to note is the ongoing angst about the demise of the abortive re-vote plan.  As is noted by columnist Beth Reinhard in today's Miami Herald, the natives are still very restless about having been disenfranchised this year.  While Reinhard doesn't bring up the ghosts of 2000, for FL Dems, they always remain in the background.

The second story is the appearance of DKos's new favorite Debbie W at a town hall meeting in the 20th CD Thursday night.  While the natives in her CD are, apparently, focusing on pocketbook issues, she felt compelled to address the issue.  My close friend who founded Fla Politics views her comments w/ considerable skepticism.

In her own words, Debbie Wasserman Schultz

Fri Mar 21, 2008 at 11:45:36 AM PDT

The Democratic congresswoman from Florida’s District 20 held a town meeting Thursday evening and defended herself against assertions that she's not doing enough for three Democratic challengers for U.S. House seats in South Florida.

Local S. Fla. Dems Furious with Schultz & Meek

Mon Mar 17, 2008 at 05:59:05 AM PDT

It's not just the netroots who are up in arms about the fact that key South Florida incumbents Debbie Wasserman Schultz and Kendrick Meek are refusing to support fellow Dems Annette Taddeo, Joe Garcia and Raul Martinez. Local Democrats are outraged, too:

Two influential congressional Democrats from South Florida are coming under fire from Miami-Dade Democrats for sitting on the sidelines as the party seeks to oust three Republican incumbents.

Miami-Dade party members meeting late Monday to elect a new leader said they were dismayed that Democratic Reps. Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Weston and Kendrick Meek of Miami have decided not to publicly support the Democratic challengers.

"I was appalled when I saw certain elected officials think they have the right to anoint who can run," Bret Berlin said as he was elected chairman of the county party. "That's not their job, it's our job."

His words echoed those of North Miami Mayor Kevin Burns, who also ran for county party chairman. He told the crowd at the meeting that he couldn't "believe two of our elected Congress members have the nerve to stand up and say they won't support three local Democratic candidates."

Fortunately, party leaders in the area are having absolutely no trouble getting behind our three excellent candidates:

County Democrats say they may have their best shot in years to unseat at least one of the three, and after winning the county party's election, Berlin immediately moved to "pledge support behind the three Democratic candidates."

The more than 100 party executive committee members who assembled at the American Legion Hall in Miami unanimously agreed.

But rather than upbraid Wasserman Schultz and Meek for their embarrassing attempts to recuse themselves from these vital races, the DCCC has signalled its assent:

The national party has said it's "very excited" about the races, and Jennifer Crider, communications director at the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, said the party has made similar arrangements when other members of Congress have conflicts.

"It doesn't change our level of commitment in any way or diminish it," Crider said. "Members [of Congress] have to do their own politics as well. We completely understand they need to do what's best for them and their constituents."

How utterly dismaying. Anyone who has read The Thumpin' knows how bitterly Rahm Emanuel fought against this insulting practice. Attitudes like Meek's and Wasserman Schultz's were one reason the Dems languished in the minority for twelve years - and, if they aren't curbed now, will be a reason we don't expand our majority.

What's more, Meek & DWS sit in totally safe districts. In Debbie's home base of FL-20, voters chose Kerry over Bush by 64-36 in the last election. Meanwhile, in Meek's FL-17, Kerry was favored by an almost hilarious 83-17 margin. So the idea that DWS and Meek could possibly be doing "what's best for them and their constituents" by kneecapping strong challengers and damaging the Democratic Party's prospects is totally ludicrous.

As I've said before - and as I won't stop saying - Debbie Wasserman Schultz either has to completely change her tune on this and vocally embrace our challengers, or step down from the DCCC. And for his part, Kendrick Meek should do the same. South Florida Democrats - and the whole party - deserve nothing less.

So. Fla. Dem MOCs won't challenge GOP

Sun Mar 09, 2008 at 03:50:51 PM PDT

As today's Miami Herald states, neither Debbie Wasserman-Schultz nor Kendrick Meek will assist the 3 Dems who are challenging the 2 Diaz-Balart brothers and Ileana Ros-Lehtinen this year.  They have expressly put their personal interests ahead of their party's interests.

Even w/ the 2 Dem pickups in '06, the GOP still maintains a sizeable edge in the FL delegation.  None of these entrenched Miami-Dade incumbents have faced serious challenges in years.  The fact that all 3 of them face serious challenges in the same year should be a cause for celebration.

Letter to my Rep (Meek) who voted Yes

Fri May 25, 2007 at 06:56:00 AM PDT

Dear Rep. Meek,

I have never in my life felt so hopeless. Each and every day we are in Iraq killing people, getting our kids killed is "sou killing" to me. The day my neighbor Carlos Arredondo blew up the van that brought the news of his son’s Alex death was the day I had enough! That was almost 3 years ago. I thought Carlos actions that day would help end the mess we created in Iraq. Yesterday with your vote you allowed more kids like Alex to get killed. I feel so hopeless because no matter what I do – I do not have a voice in this so called free country.  I thought this was what our country was about "we the people". Yesterday I found out it isn’t about the people at all.

Pelosi "front pages" yet more frosh.

Wed Dec 13, 2006 at 08:01:31 PM PDT

Incoming Speaker Nancy Pelosi continues her campaign to boost the profiles of newly elected Dems (traditionally the most vulnerable in their next elections) and the 30-Something set.

The Hill:

Pelosi also announced several new members to the coveted Appropriations panel, including Rep.-elect Ciro Rodriguez (Texas) who won a runoff against Rep. Henry Bonilla (R-Texas). Others named to the spending panel are: Reps. Ben Chandler (Ky.), Michael Honda (Calif.), Barbara Lee (Calif.), Betty McCollum (Minn.), Tim Ryan (Ohio), C.A. "Dutch" Ruppersberger (Md.), Adam Schiff (Calif.), Tom Udall (N.M.) and Debbie Wasserman Schultz (Fla.).

Freshman almost never score seats on Approps. Incoming Republicans changed that, following their 1994 "revolution," but Dems haven't yet had the chance to adopt that strategy. [UPDATE: And they still haven't. Rodriguez is, at best, a "red shirt" freshman -- i.e., not one at all. He previously served from 1997 through 2004, albeit in a different district.]  Seating Rodriguez there puts him in a strong position to take care of business at home, and solidify his hold on the seat.

Note, too, that Debbie Wasserman Schultz and Tim Ryan did in fact score both Steering & Policy and Approps. Wasserman Schultz also takes over a Chief Deputy Whip spot.

Do not gaze directly at Debbie Wasserman Schultz! If you find yourself between her and wherever she's going, do not attempt to flee! Throw yourself to the ground and remain motionless, and she may spare you!

Other 30-Something standouts rumored to be under consideration for exclusive committees who've now made it official: Kenrick Meek and Artur Davis, both to Ways & Means.

Note, too, netroots favorite Paul Hodes of New Hampshire, who'll be enjoying a ringside seat on Henry Waxman's Government Reform Committee, along with Giant Killer Chris Murphy of Connecticut.

Elsewhere in the stratosphere, check out these rising stars:

The incoming Speaker said she will recommend that Rep.-elects Kathy Castor (Fla.), Betty Sutton (Ohio) and Peter Welch (Vt.) be given seats on the Rules Committee.

The Rules Committee Members, as those of you who've become familiar with our friend Louise Slaughter know, are the guys with their hands on all the strings. They decide what amendments get to the floor, what the rules of debate are, and just about everything else surrounding the terms under which votes in the House are cast. You have got to be absolutely rock-solid to make it to the Rules Committee, so this is a big vote of confidence in Castor, Sutton and Welch.

Being "rock-solid," of course, has two meanings. First, they're going to be rock-solid in their support of the leadership, which has entrusted them with these influential positions. But more than being a dependable vote, they've got to have a knack for the process, and will almost always be people who've got an understanding of procedure. Castor, the daughter of Florida politico Betty Castor, comes from a political family like the Speaker herself. Sutton and Welch are both former state legislators, Welch being the immediate past president of the Vermont State Senate.

It should also be noted that Sutton and Welch replace the dependably progressive Sherrod Brown and Bernie Sanders, respectively, each of whom were fixtures in their districts before moving up to the Senate. Any questions at home about where the new kids will fit in in the new House ought to be settled with these appointments. Their Rules Committee seats will keep them out of the spotlight on big time bills, but they'll be on C-SPAN quite a bit managing debate on the rules (every bill that comes to the floor under normal circumstances -- or "regular order" -- comes with its own, customized rule setting the terms of debate), and will be the sort of behind-the-scenes fixers that will make appropriators and other legislative powerhouses want to make sure their districts are taken care of.

Last but not least in committee news, there's Rep. William Jefferson, returned to Congress by the folks back home in New Orleans. Jefferson won't be returning to the prestigious and powerful Ways & Means Committee, though. But neither will he be sitting on his hands. Speaker Pelosi's got to respect the will of his constituents, who had to have known what they were buying into when they sent him back to Washington. So pending any further developments with his case, Jefferson will be sitting on the Small Business committee.

Match made in heaven?

Mon Dec 11, 2006 at 10:57:10 AM PDT

I was reading an article in the Washington Post about the young democrats in Washington, that group who calls themselves "30-Something Working Group"
And how they are helping to set Old Line Dems in the back seat.

Nancy Pelosi is bringing in her big broom and sweeping out the cobwebs, placing these young turks into committees and places that many Old Line Dems feel they don’t belong.

Pelosi is making room for these and other young House Democrats, giving them opportunities they would not normally enjoy under the rigid seniority system that typically defines life in the Capitol.

My Afternoon with Nancy Pelosi and Friends

Tue Oct 03, 2006 at 10:23:01 PM PDT

The other day, my mother called me, quite excited, to tell me that she had gotten an invitation in the mail to attend a meeting about the new Medicare bill with our representative, Debbie Wasserman-Schultzand Nancy Pelosi. Well, you know how it is--you can't say no to your mom! Truth be told, I love seeing politicians in person, so I agreed to go.
I will take you to today's meeting, but first, meet my mom. Tell you what--you can call her what my son calls her. dKos community, let me introduce you to Fast Helen. Fast Helen turned 82 last month, but if you ask her age, she will tell you that she will be 83 next August. She still drives (horribly, but she drove horribly when she was 50 too), lives independently, and is the first one in the supermarket every morning. Fast Helen was a lifelong Republican (though she often voted for non-Rethugs) until the whole Clinton impeachment thing totally pissed her off, and she switched and became Fast Helen (D-FL).

Kicking Some Serious Butt

Thu Sep 14, 2006 at 07:53:52 PM PDT

I had never heard of him, but tonight on C-SPAN Democratic Representative Kendrick Meek from Florida's 17th district kicked some serious butt. He had all kinds of charts and visual aids, including a giant Republican rubber stamp. I wish I could quote his speech. It was fantastic!

He showed how that in the 5½ years of the Bush regime this country has borrowed 1.05 trillion dollars, that's trillion with a T. In all the history of the U. S. government, for all 42 presidents combined we only borrowed 1.01 trillion. We owe the Japanese $662.8 billion dollars and to the Chinese we owe $249.8 billion. How is it that Congress ignores this? And even with the people I try to talk to about this, they just do not seem to see how serious a problem this is. I get so angry I want to butt heads together.

Is The IRS Meddling In Politics? Again!

Wed Jul 19, 2006 at 02:47:29 PM PDT

The Political Activity Compliance Initiative (PACI). Sounds ominous, doesn't it? That's what the IRS is calling its program to investigate churches and other non-profit groups that they suspect of engaging in impermissible political activity.

Tax-exempt organizations are properly prohibited from overtly engaging in partisan politics. It's entirely appropriate to keep religious institutions and others from operating as tax-free front groups for politicians while avoiding campaign finance laws. The problem with PACI is that it doesn't provide a workable definition for the activity it seeks to regulate. Consequently, the affected institutions have no clear guidelines for when they may be in violation. In addition, the agency can use the initiative to target groups for partisan purposes. The result would be political activity compliance, alright.

The Delahunt, Meek, Ryan, and Schultz Show is on.

This team of fired up Dems is giving the Administration a ration of truth almost every night. They have turned the House floor into the best show on television.

The "30 Something Hour" is a chance for "30 Something" Members of Congress to talk for an hour on the House floor about issues that affect the next generation of Americans. These will not be typical speeches on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives but rather a back and forth discussion between "30 Something" Members. "30 Something" Members will read personal accounts from next generation Americans that will highlight their struggles during these times of a Republican-run government. You can e-mail the 30 Something Members at 30SomethingDems@mail.house.gov.

Is anyone watching what is going on on C-SPAN right now?

Fri Nov 04, 2005 at 09:29:00 AM PDT

I went to bed last night and Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, Tim Ryan and Kendrick Meek were talking. I turn the tv on an hour ago and they're on again. They are giving a great rundown of the leak case and are being very forceful. It is quite amazing tv. Anyway, just thought I'd let people know, check it out for yourselves. UPDATE: And to think, today's my 23rd birthday. Hopefully I'll be up there with the 30Somethings when I take NJ's 5th District back from the Repubs...Guess we'll have to call it the Sub40s to include an under 30 guy.

the 30 somethings are on cspan again

Thu Nov 03, 2005 at 06:13:47 PM PDT

today the 30 something crowd is on cspan speaking about the deficit and how it is affecting the student loans and family savings of america. america, we are allowing china and other countries to take jobs from americans because in america we care about our workers and their families. now i am all for china developing, but they should not be allowed to subdue human and workers rights to achieve a certaim mass and then think about providing there people with human and workers rights. china and other countries will grow, however, we are allowing them to grow in the short run on the backs of our growing poor and middleclass (mainly by china not offering healthcare and workers rights).

30Something Working Group: Jr. Dems Talk Back

Wed Nov 02, 2005 at 07:57:09 AM PDT

On November 1, 2005 the 30Something Working Group lit up the floor of the House with a scathing discussion of the current administration. It was exciting to see Democratic Reps telling the truth without whitewash or reservation.

In my diary, OMG!.. CSPAN:  Dems on the floor NOW people commented on the real time discussion, but it doesn't do the Congresspeople justice. You have to read the full transcript.
Thomas Congressional Record 11/1/05 30something Working Group

They come on CSPAN weekly. MUST SEE TV!

READ it, PRINT it and PASS IT ALONG.

More on the flip.
