CA-48: Call to Action - Final Weekend Push

Fri Dec 02, 2005 at 12:34:29 PM PDT

On Tuesday, California will hold another special election - this time, to fill the vacant House seat in CA's 48th CD. Our candidate is Steve Young. Here's how you can help him for the final weekend push:

  • Virtual phone banking. This can be done by anyone, anywhere. The campaign sends you a list of names and numbers of district residents, and you call them to help get out the vote. Fun and easy, and if you have a cell phone with free nights and weekends, it only costs you your time. To join in this effort, send an e-mail to ca48@easyco.com.

  • Volunteer. If you leave in or near the district, contact the campaign and help pound the pavement. You can sign up on this page, but your best bet at this point is to call the campaign directly at (949) 640-4400. You can also send an e-mail to marion@steveyoungforcongress.com with your availability. The district is in Orange County - the HQ is in Irvine. In other words, not too far for those of you in LA or San Diego to come up for a day. The weekend weather looks quite pleasant.

  • E-mail your California friends. Tell them about this race. Even if you aren't sure if they live in CA-48, they probably know someone who does. Word of mouth is key.

  • Keep an eye on BigDog04's diaries. He's our source for info straight from the campaign.

Let's do this thing!

UPDATE: House race guru Superribbie details why he thinks we might have a shot in this district.

P.S. Response to this call to action has been very strong, so if you've e-mailed the campaign and have yet to hear back, please be patient. They are working very hard to get back to you as soon as possible. Also, if you want to volunteer in person, you should try phoning rather than e-mailing.

My husband (an Orange County "republican" - and when I say "republican" I mean that he's the kind of Republican we rarely see now - fiscally conservative) and I voted absentee ballot for Steve Young last week.

I work in Irvine and live South (near Mission Viejo) and I see a lot of Steve Young signs around - especially in Irvine.  Lots of young, single professionals and young families in Irvine.  Campbell has a lot more ads on TV and fewer signs.  Gilcrist is hilarious - his signs have a minuteman picture on them and his whole bent is "keeping our borders protected"...

After he loses - he's going to be out there helping to pick fruit and nuts for the rest of the United States.  :)

Wonder why?  Could it be because of Iraq, Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, institutional poverty, lack of health care coverage, paying for those planted news stories in Iraq?  All of this on the heels of some of the largest corporate tax breaks in history, relaxation of the corporate bankruptcy laws (hello Delphi) and the highest oil company profits in the history of forever...

Why would we need to "raise taxes"?  I say let's take away the tax breaks for the top 1% and repeal the corporate tax breaks...but wait...is that raising taxes???  (sarcastic tone)

DLC slanders Murtha/Pelosi as "surrendering" on Iraq
                http://www.workingforchange.com/...
The Democratic Leadership Council has really gone over the line. In today's Washington Post, their staffer Marshall Wittman - who used to be a Republican operative and top official at the Christian Coalition - said that Democrats who are pushing for an exit strategy from Iraq are "offering surrender." This is an organization that continues to say it wants to "help" Democrats - but as we can see, they aren't interested in anything like that.
The Post quoted me responding to Wittman. I said, "It is not surprising that a bunch of insulated elitists in the Washington establishment -- most of whom have never served in uniform -- would stab the Democratic Party in the back and attack the courage of people like Vietnam War hero Jack Murtha and Nancy Pelosi for their stand on Iraq."

          •  Gilchrist signs (none / 0)

Only problem is, Gilchrist's volunteers seem to be taking down our Irvine signs for Steve as fast as we can get them put up. They crumple ours and throw them down. One of our volunteers has called his headquarters and really chewed them out!
            •  Camera (none / 0)

If they have `em, tell volunteers to snap photos on their digital cameras or camera cell phones. Better yet of course would be video. Don't waste much time doing this - tearing down signs is, sadly, a "macho" party of many campaigns - but if the opportunity presents itself, a picture speaks a thousand words.

afternoon and a fax has gone out to every part of their campaign saying that anyone in their campaign caught tearing down a sign is OUT!

He meant it. He thinks it's more of a Campbell trick . A copy of fax was sent to Steve Campaign Manager.

        pay attention to.

I thank Rotobabe, first for a GREAT screename, and second for using the absentee ballot system.

The Republicans, over 15 years ago discovered if they spend time, year round, getting people signed up on absentee ballots they almost guaranteed the votes and they had the easiest one call GOTV effort with that voter!

"Hi! Did you mail your ballot for us? Great! Thanks!" end of GOTV for that voter.

Imagine having thousands in each District.

The Young campaign has pushed this hard in the last weeks and we've had over 1,000 downloaded from our website alone.

If you've got a campaign, get a group that does nothing but sign up absentee ballots! They guarantee your votes.

This is IT, gang of Kossacks. We are down to the last few days. All the issues of the past are gone. Nothing matters now but three things:

      A. Getting all the bodies down here for Sat/Sun/Mon/Tue as humanely possible! Email our Ground Team here and leave your contact info and when you are avaibable to help that Ground Team best schedule the effort!

      B. Virtual Phone Banking: From anywhere you can help by emailing here and you'll be set up to receive 25 names at a time. Please work hard. Make lots of calls. When you feel like stopping make another 25. That's how we'll win this election! This entire election will be won on turnout.

      C. And, of course, we always need funds for materials and more TV time! If humanely possible, there aren't any more big time series of Congressional races until CA-50 on June 6th, help us out to the limit of your ability at our contributions page.

You'll never find another team or Candidate working harder to make the Dream come true. Get behind the New 2006 Congress with a start by putting Steve Young in Congress in 2005!

  •  C'mon, Busby backers! (none / 1)

OC is very close to Cunningham's district, where Francine Busby will be fighting like a bulldog to help us reclaim a seat.

Busby backers should invest a little sweat equity in this race -- so they can be paid back, with interest, when the next special election rolls around.

You stay classy, San Diego!  ;)

  •  Mission Viejo (none / 0)

Is Mission Viejo in this district? If so my brother lives there, I would be happy to contact him.
  •  Thanks for this (4.00 / 4)

I was going to do a long diary this afternoon analyzing why this race is winnable and we shouldn't give up or slack off on it, but now I will take the opportunity (ironically) to be a slacker and put a condensed version in this comment:

    1. This is one of 16 districts in California where Kerry did better than Gore (along with 1, 2, 6, 8, 9, 10, 12, 13, 14, 15, 17, 23, 29, 36, and 53), losing 59-41 rather than 60-40.  It is a step in the right direction and may be a sign of increasing Dem strength.

    2. The net partisan balance is 58.5-41.5 GOP.  This makes it more Dem-friendly than the seats held by the following:

    TX-17 (Edwards--31.8% Dem)
    UT-02 (Matheson--32.8%)
    MS-04 (Taylor--33.5%)
    ND-AL (Pomeroy--37%)
    MO-04 (Skelton--38.5%)
    SD-AL (Herseth--39.8%)

Not a long list, but a win is certainly not out of the question.

    1. Most of all, the presence of Minutemen head and American Independent Party candidate Jim Gilchrist makes this very doable.  Gilchrist took about 15% in the open primary and is well-financed and running a real campaign.  There is a likelihood that he builds on that and ends up with about 20%.  As a right-wing hardline anti-immigration candidate, that 20% is coming straight from GOPer John Campbell's hide.  In fact, if the same breakdown of voters shows up on Tuesday as voted in 2004 and Gilchrist takes 20%, the likely result is Young 41, Campbell 39, Gilchrist 20.  Remember the special election in the heavily Dem Nem Mexico 3d in 1997 (replacing then-newly appointed Energy Secretary Bill Richardson)?  The Greens did what they always do in New Mexico and the final result was 43 R, 40 D, 17 G.

    2. Finally, the California GOP is laboring with the twin albatrosses of Bush and Schwarzenegger around their necks.  The dismal performance of the ballot initiatives last month speaks to the apathy and disenchantment of the GOP.  Turnout stands to work in our favor.

    3.

    •  question (none / 0)

Great analysis, Superribbie. What are your thoughts on Young's showing in the primary?
      •  I have actually seen the numbers (none / 0)

As a campaign IT "guy", I have actually seen the voter histories and have seen the turnout numbers by party for the primary:

          Republican         29%
          Democrat           20%
          Decline to State   11%
          American Ind       11%

With turnouts like those, the primary results start to make sense.

        •  And remember, (none / 0)

this is a 3-way race:  a Repub, and Independent, and a Dem.  The Repub and Independent will be splitting the conservative vote, so that should make it that much more winnable for Young.

SO LET'S GET OUT THERE AND DO ALL WE CAN TO MAKE IT HAPPEN.

      •  They were discouraging at first blush (none / 0)

but not so much if you consider that the "action" was on the GOP side with Campbell vs. Brewer.  This is similar to the Ohio 02 Special in August.  To compare, Young took 9% of all primary votes in CA-48; Hackett took 13% of all primary votes in his race.

      •  The "Call the Voters" application (none / 0)

is an application that helps users (you) call voters in CA-48.

You start by accessing a website by entering a URL into a browser (you get this URL when you sign up).  This web page will ask you for a user ID and a password.  You gets these from me via email.  When you enter your ID and password, you are given a quick "I agree not to swear at the voters or call them in the middle of the night" page.  After agreeing to the terms, you get a list of, typically 50, Democrat voters in CA-48.

The voters are quite random.  You see their names, addresses, ages, and phone numbers.  When you are ready to make a call, you pick a name from the list by clicking on the "voter ID" number.  This gives you a single page that shows the voter you are calling.  You then call the voter, talk with them, etc.  After you finish the call, you check a box or two on the screen and hit the "Save Entries" button.

Once you call a voter, it disappears from your list.  So rinse and repeat until the list is empty.  If you want more, email and we will refill you.

If you want to call from a paper list, you can print the list from your browser screen and then go back later and enter the responses.

There are also web pages with sample "live person" and "answering machine" scripts.  We encourage people to read up on Steve's positions and "talk from the heart", instead of sounding like a recording (we are doing those calls as well).

I hope this is what you were looking for.

This is what we've been wishing and waiting for, here in OC! Thanks, Kossacks and all other netizens. Now, if the DCCC would only send out a blast, as it did for the CA-50 (we got a blast from CaDems the other day!) life would be complete.

One thing that people here realize, and that will have to become our mantra, is that congressional races are NOT local any more. We all have to work together to recreate Congress, and that will mean working for races all over the country, no matter where we happen to live.

In terms of the Primary numbers, you can see that if Dems had been willing to stick together for this open primary (i.e., the vanity candidates had realized they shouldn't run, and other prominent Dems had understood that (1) Marilyn Brewer couldn't win even with their hellp, and (2) even though she is pro-choice, she would still support Bush's policies, so what was the point), Steve most likely would have come in second in the primary. That would have put a whole different spin on this race. Over and over, I heard people say, "oh, but I'm going to vote for him in the General Election -- the primary doesn't really matter" but it did matter, because all the papers AND the DNC, DCCC, etc., wrote him off.

Open primaries in California are going to have to mean that we approach politics in a whole different way. This should be our lesson.

But that was then, this is now, and Thursday night the headquarters was hopping! Let's hope for a big crowd out this weekend, and lots of phone bankers (and donations) from all over the country. Thanks again.

  •  I've been skeptical... (none / 0)

...about Dem prospects of success and I firmly believe that without Gilchrist in the race that they would be 1/x where "x" is exceedingly large.

I think someone up-thread was still too optimistic, saying that if Gilchrist gets 20 percent, Young wins.  I think it's closer to 25 percent...but if Young and Gilchrist both get turnout, then I think Young sneaks in.   Just as the Libertarian candidate cost the Dem the election a while back by peeling off some liberal vote.

What gives me hope is that I heard a Gilchrist ad on KNX-1070 (radio) while driving home today...much more sophisticated than I would have given Gilchrist credit for being able to mount.

anyone with a question for the Young campaign simply go to the website below and look for the support window.

This is a first for any political website in the US and will be very useful for you to answer questions for people on the edge.

Try it out! If no one's on the system then you can send an email that will be answered tomorrow.

And send cash to the green Contribute Now button as it will help us buy more TV time even if you give it late this weekend! This election doesn't end until Tuesday at 8PM Pacific!
