CODEPINK was just able to get through to Cindy and Diane Wilson in Crawford, and there was a miscommunication---the notion that Cindy and others would be arrested was only conjecture by a state representative, not any law enforcement official.  Bush's motorcade will be driving down the road where Cindy is camped out en route to a fundraiser Thursday, and the representative told protesters that he "imagined" they would be arrested as a national security threat.

Visit for updates on Cindy's stand, and CODEPINK for ways you can show your solidarity.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

You can add a private note to this diary when hotlisting it:
Are you sure you want to remove this diary from your hotlist?
Are you sure you want to remove your recommendation? You can only recommend a diary once, so you will not be able to re-recommend it afterwards.

It was flying around pretty quick.

Thanks to the Republican from Crawford for supporting our cause by making speculative statements that he has no power to carry out.

I'm glad we're getting more clear on this, but there still seems to be a lot of confusion about it.  How do we even know it was a Republican from Crawford who talked to Cindy?  I don't blame her.  She is under an immense amount of stress.  We need to be helpful to her by running our crap detectors at their highest frequency, by doing what dailykos is great at--verifying everything.
    •  This was a good dry run. (none)
Perhaps it gave the Bush handlers an idea of how many folks are watching this and how quickly support can be generated. And I wouldn't put it past this bunch to try to arrest Cindy at some point down the road.

Hell, they invaded a country based on blatant lies while telling the entire world to go fuck itself. After that, arresting a grieving mother might seem like no big deal to these guys.

MeetwithCindy was working earlier today and yesterday according to a poster on Booman Tribune. Then it stopped working and hasn't been up since. It does have a lot of good info on it though from what the poster said.

Guess we will have to wait and see. Maybe in a few days it will be up again.

It was working just fine early a.m. today. Been down since b4 noon. They also sent me an email with a password code to login.I tried to reply but the email was returned. It is my understanding they are having a huge bandwidth problem. Remember this site just went up I believe yesterday so be patient. I do recommend taking the link out until the problem is resolved though.

for the clarification. It is important to be as accurate and precise on these issues. This sounds more plausible. I don't think even this  administration is really that stupid to arrest someone like Cindy.

Cindy Sheehan to Be Arrested Thursday

  •  I still regard it as a threat (4.00)
Some local repug elected bigwig comes in and starts talking about arrest may only be an attempt to intimidate and dishearten, but it should be taken very seriously.
    •  It was no threat in NYC (none)
Solid blue terrority, and yet thousands of protestors swept off the street and housed in holding pens with acid on the floor.  The guy with the chalk-message system has his bike impounded during the entire convention.

What the heck do you think will happen to those who dare protest Imperial Bush in his own backyard?
I bet that state rep thought he was doing Cindy a favor.

      •  I spoke to the Representative. Story is garbled (none)
I called Representative Lon Burnam about it, and he told me the story was only aboult half correct. My report of our conversation is found at Politics Plus Stuff.

Briefly, Rep Lon Burnam of Fort Worth is a long time peace activist (Director of the Dallas Peace Commission)and was concerned about two things. He knows that there is a motorcade scheculded through Crawford sometime Friday, and he knows that Rove/Bush do not like the kind of publicity and do things like were done to protestors in New York.

Only in Texas there is a quicker response and less honesty by police. So he felt that there was a reasonable possibility that protesters would be arrested.

Since a number of people who have never been to a protest before were already showing up, he felt they should recognize that they ran the risk of being arrested and possibly dealth with harshly by local police. People who go to Crawford should be prepared for the worst possibilities.

Lon is also on a Texas Law Enforcement committee in the Texas House, so he has personally contacted law enforcement personnel in both Austin and McLennan County to ensure that protesters have the opportunity to use their First Amendement Rights. Since the Texas Legislature is in Special Session right now, he can't go to Cradford himself.

He fully supports the protest (He was the only legislator to stand up in the Texas Legislature two years ago and speak against both the invasion of Iraq and the Patriot Act) but he wants people to be prepared if things turn bad.

He wasn't just doing Cindy a favor. He was trying to do all the protestors a big favor. Texas has no better elected official to support the protest.

    •  Just clarifying (none)
It's not so much a threat as just speculation that a representative expressed, as I understand it.  Of course we definitely still want people to join Cindy in Texas (I don't think threatening jailtime would've really deterred people anyway), we just need to make sure we get our facts straight, and that we keep media attention on the story in the coming days with the landing of the shuttle, etc.

    •  Cindy's arrest (none)
Bush would have to be a total idiot to do anything to have Cindy arrested -- oh, but wait, he is. ButI do seriously doubt even he is that stupid. My understanding is that some senator or congressman surmised she might be arrested. That's not facts, folks.
  •  I'm still going (4.00)
Conjecture by a state representative is good enough for me.  In the past conjecture has always been issued by these guys and whenever the protest isn't very large they simply follow through and then tell us that their conjecture was a warning whenever we have told them that we thought that they were only conjecturing.  If the protest is large enough to scare them they call it conjecture forever after.  They don't fool me.....I'm sure they will use this representative's conjecture as some sort of public litmus test and fully intend to let them know how I really feel!

  •  PR is something they know about (none)
PR and media manipulation has been taken to a science by Cheney-Rove. Arresting Cindy would have been detrimental to their "Support the troops" mantra.

They would first have to discredit her by running the right-wing MSM slime machine. I guess the first step has been taken by Drudge. We'll see if others start to carry water by making her to be a crazed and deranged mother driven to insanity and as a rsult a personal security risk to "herself" and of course the CinC and as a result, for her benefit they have taken her into "protective" custody.

Just like destroying any and all infrastructure in Iraq and the killing of tens of thousands of Iraqi as well as the sacrifices of the Casey Sheehan's for the "noble" purpose of bringing democracy to the Middle  East and lest we forget fight the terrorists "over there".

  •  Just Spoke to Cindy (none)
I got Cindy on the phone and she continued to maintain that the threat of arrest was real, but said that it came to her via Diane Wilson.  I spoke to Diane, who said that it came from Texas State Rep Lon Burman, a Democrat.  She said that he was not speaking on behalf of or communicating any information from the Bush Administration or the Secret Service or the Sheriff's Department.  But she maintained that what he had predicted was already starting.

Both Sheehan and Wilson said that the County Sherrif's deputies on Saturday identified several areas as county property on which they could stand.  Now they claim that most of these area are private property, and that they had not known that.  So, this afternoon the deputies forced Cindy and about 25 people with her onto one small area on one side of a road.

Wilson said that they threatened arrest if anyone refused to move to the proper small area.  Cindy was skeptical of the claims about who owned the land.  "Can you believe that on the road to the President's house they don't know exactly who owns it?"

Both she and Wilson said they expected they would get arrested Thursday.  Cindy said, "I think we need as many people here on Thursday anyway, because Rice and Rumsfeld will be here....I'd rather not get arrested, but I'm willing to, I'm willing to have them pick me up and carry me away."

Over on, the following was posted:

We can help Cindy Sheehan turn the heat up on Bush.

1-Email the White House. Send a simple three-word message, "Talk to Cindy!"

2-Call the White House comment line (202) 456-1111, and/or send a postcard to George Bush, The White House, 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW, Washington, DC 20500 with the same three words.

3-Spread the word! Send this appeal to your friends, to email lists, to blogs. Post it on websites. Let's swamp the White House with our simple three word demand: TALK TO CINDY!

  •  I Received This Email Today from MFSO (4.00)
regarding Cindy Sheehan and her protest in Crawford, TX:

Dear Members of Military Families Speak Out,

As you may know, MFSO member and Gold Star Families for Peace co-founder Cindy Sheehan has camped out close to President Bush's Crawford ranch while he vacations there for the month of August -- seeking to meet with him personally to ask about the "noble cause" that took the life of her son Casey Sheehan on April 4, 2004 in Sadr City, Iraq. Thus far he has refused to meet with her.

We spoke to Cindy last night -- she would love it if Military Families Speak Out members and members of Gold Star Families for Peace could join her in Crawford. She is planning to be there for the month of August. If your situation allows, and you are able to join her -- for a day, a few days or longer -- it will help build the powerful message that is now going out across the nation and around the world. The voices of Gold Star Families and the voices of families whose loved ones are currently in Iraq or about to deploy are particularly powerful right now.

If you think you might be able to go to Crawford, please get in touch with us right away. The Military Families Speak Out press person will be going to Crawford to help get our voices out, so we'd like to know as soon as possible who is considering making this trip.

Accommodations will range from camping out (Veterans for Peace and other supporters are collecting camping gear, so you don't need to bring it if you're coming by plane) -- to other arrangements. Check on the Crawford Peace House website under "Protests" for a list of accommodations in the Crawford area.

Below is today's New York Times article about Cindy in Crawford. Again -- let us know right away if you are considering making the trip to Crawford!

    In peace and solidarity

This hour's frame in the MSM appears to be that Cindy is being a bit unreasonable by demanding a meeting in Crawford since Bush met with her last year. Just saw wire reports syndicated by the Chicago Trib to this effect.
